A Servan’t Heart

Identifying Christ honoring Leadership Among You

1 Peter 5:1-4 (NIV)

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
we are not called to be “lords”
we are servants to the people as a Father is a servant to his children
providing for their needs by feeding v 2
but under the overlordship of Christ
we are to do this willingly as unto Him
provisionally as unto them

3 John 9-10
I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us. 10 so when I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.

Diotrephes is a classic negative example of what not to be
your “charge” to the work does not put you “in charge”
you are a leader, not a boss
you lead by humble example, demonstrating how God works in you
you lead with dignity, respect for others
you lead with their agreement if you want them to “follow”
without “followers” you are no leader
